Visiting the Met, Ancient Egypt transformed: The Middle Kingdom

The visit to the special exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York was carried out in the framework of EGYP 110 Introduction to Classical Hieroglyphic Egyptian I.

On November 14 the course participants of EGYPT 110 went to New York to visit the special exhibit “Ancient Egypt transformed: The Middle Kingdom” at the MET under the guidance of the course instructor Christina Geisen. Since the course focuses on the classical Middle Egyptian language and a lot of texts from the Middle Kingdom will be translated in the course of the class, the visit complemented the class content very nicely, featuring the master pieces of that time period, brought together from museums around the world. The guided tour provided the students with additional information on the history, religion, and society of the Middle Kingdom, so that they can now place the texts covered in class better in their social context. The highlight for the students was the awareness of being able to identify words on the inscribed monuments, based on the knowledge they have already gained in the class.
